The Catholic Church in Malawi launches immediate preparation for the celebration of four missionary jubilees, which the Catholic Church in the whole world celebrates in 2022.

Catholic communities are encouraged to prepare and celebrate theses anniversaries in their ordinary daily activities as faith communities. The Anniversary celebrations should have these three dimensions:

1. Prayer: Offering thanksgiving prayers for the growth of the Church in many continents with so many parish Churches, priests or sisters’ houses, hospitals, schools, seminaries and other houses of formation constructed with guidance from Propaganda Fide and the spiritual and financial support from the PMS.

2.  Offering prayers for the future of the Church in Malawi and the whole world in the years to come.

Historical and missionary reflections on the strategies and activities done in the universal and local Churches in the past 400, 200 and 100 years.

3. Missionary awareness and missionary/pastoral:  plans for the future of the Church in Malawi and beyond for the coming 50, 100 and 500 years.

At the Catholic Secretariat of Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), a press briefing is underway on four Missionary Anniversaries in 2022 in the Catholic Church.

The briefing is on the following anniversaries/Jubilees that the Catholic Church will be celebrating this year:

400th anniversary of the establishment of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (previously known as Propaganda Fidei) by Pope Gregory XV in 1622.

200th anniversary of the foundation of the Missionary Society for the Propagation of faith by the Venerable Pauline Marie Jaricot in 1822.

100th anniversary of the designation of the this and two other Missionary Societies as Pontifical (PMS) by Pope Pius XI in 1922.

150th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Paulo Manna, Born in 1872, founder of the Missionary Union (PMU), which was designated Pontifical by Pope Pius XII in 1956..

These Anniversaries will be formally celebrated on October 23this year on World Mission Sunday (Lamulungu la Chibalalitso cha Mpingo).

In Malawi, the National launch was held on February 5th, 2022 in St. Martin de Porres parish in the Diocese of Dedza, celebrating World Day for Consecrated Life and PMU Day.

The main celebrant was Right Reverend Peter Adrian Chifukwa, Bishop of Dedza Diocese.

Each and every year the PMS family celebrates the Pontifical Missionary Union on the second day of February (Feast of the Presentation of the Lord), when we also pray for consecrated life and on February 11 (World day of Prayer for the sick).

This year in the diocese of Dedza this day will be celebrated in a special way on Saturday the 5th of February because we will also launch the celebrations of the four PMS anniversaries and Jubilees.

All the congregations working in Dedza have registered their participation on this day. We are expecting over 150 participants.

In addition to this, the Christian faithful will also be part of the celebration since the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is also the feast of the whole Catholic Church.

The celebration on this day will start with a meditation/reflection beginning at 8:30 am followed by Sacrament of Reconciliation. Then Mass will begin at 11:00 am, at the end of which the Bishop will commission all of the Parish Priests to Launch the PMS anniversaries and Jubilees in there particular parishes on February 13, 2022.

The activities of this day will end with some entertainment activities after Lunch.

The theme of the celebration for this day is, "You will be my witnesses (Acts 1: 8 a). This is also the theme for World Mission Sunday this Jubilee year.
