We are happy to meet you today as we celebrate the 200 year of the society for the Propagation of Faith and Centenary of the Pontifical designation of three of the Pontifical Mission societies.
The Society for the Propagation of Faith is 200 years today. It was founded by Pauline Marie Jaricot on 3rd May 1822.
Today is also 100th anniversary of Motu Proprio “Romanum Pontificium” with which Pope Pius XI declared 3 Societies of PMS Pontifical.
The three societies are:
- Pontifical Mission Society for the propagation of Faith,
- Pontifical Mission Society of the Holy Childhood Association
- and Pontifical Mission Society of St. Peter the Apostle.
His Eminence Luis Anthonio Cardinal Tagle, the Prefect for the Evangelization of Peoples, and the Rev. Fr. Solomon Zaku PMS National Director in Nigeria they have met at the opening Ceremony of the Regional conference of Catholic Bishops of west Africa Bishops. 4th General Assembly at ECOWAS Secretariat, Abuja.
On the occasion, of the centenary of the proclamation of the Society of the Holy Childhood as Pontifical, the members of the Holy Childhood Association (HCA), they perform the flags parade for the opening ceremony of the Regional conference of West African Bishops.
It was an epoch making event.
The Prefect of the Congregation for the evangelization of Peoples (CEP) paid a courtesy visit to the Secretariat.
Cardinal Targle acknowledged the tremendous contribution of Nigeria to the Universal Mission and expressed his appreciation to the entire PMS staff and all missionaries in Nigeria for the good work they are doing in promoting the missions.
The Pontifical Mission Societies are directly under the Congregation for the evangelization of Peoples.
